Aerial photography in archaeology in the Che"mno Land.
First experiences, potential and perspectives
Summary
The article presents the results of aerial observations of the Che"mno Land. Its main aim was to collect
aerial photographs of archaeological sites in the area. During the flights we focused on two main questions
of using aerial photographs to assist field archaeology. The first question concerned those archaeological
sites which exist as earthworks. The second one was to identify well-known, plough-levelled sites and search
for new, unknown sites.
As a result of 18 hours flying time (dating from 1998 to 2001) 1000 aerial photographs were taken. The
first aim was achieved. The second aim, after a period of failures, finally brought visible effects in summer
2000. It was then that a multicultural Neolithic settlement was discovered in Zelgno, Che"mÝa, site 12. It
was the Late Band Ceramic Culture settlement of the BrzeÊç Kujawski type.
Using aerial photography for archaeology in the Che"mno Land has proved its potential not only in
a purely investigative aspect but also in monitoring protected archaeological sites situated in this area.
